Trapped in the Thai sex trade
Intro:
We have decided to cover the sex slave industry in Thailand as our human rights project. This is an issue that needs to be heard about around the whole world because not only is it not acceptable, but it is cruel and dehumanizing.
Background:
Sex slavery today in Thailand is not uncommon. About 35,000 people (mostly young girls and women) live as sex slaves. Most of these girls are working to earn money for their families who have become dependent on them for surviving a day to day life. Young girls are often sold into slavery before they even have a chance to make something of their lives.
One girl will normally be traded and sold 3- 10 times between pimps and illegal gangs. After about 5 years she will be thrown out because she is no longer “useable” and is considered to be of no use to the clients. And whether she be released or not she will certainly have contracted HIV or AIDS.
Sex slavery goes back hundreds of years in Asia and throughout South-east Asia there are 300,000 women and children involved in the trade. To this day there is still no enforced law protecting these individuals.. It is in fact common for law enforcement authorities to be “regulars” at brothels.
Sex slaves continue to be in high demand for the reason that sex tourism in Thailand is a growing industry. Tour companies advertise trips to Thailand for “sex vacations”. Men from all over the world, especially from developed countries like Germany, Ireland, and England, come to “experience” the women..
Also, even though the girls are provided with condoms, there is no rule saying that the men must wear them and often times they refuse to put them on. Hence the high rate of AIDS and other STD’s amongst the girls. To add to all of this the girls are injected once a month with a birth control medicine (which is not a bad thing) but the same needle is shared between all of them creating the possibility of their diseases spreading even more.
Sex slavery should no longer be acceptable. Many an organization is underway to help free the innocent souls taken in as sex slaves. With funding and support many of these lives can be freed and given a chance to live normally with out the fear and suffering that they live with every day.
The Issue:
We have created a YouTube project that you can view below.
Solutions:
In order to promote our cause and help to stop the sex trade of women in Thailand we intend on creating awareness in our school by setting up a collage of girls whom represent those in the sex slave trade today.. Hopefully students and teachers who see this display will realize what a large problem this is and will help to take action. Along side we intend on describing the issue so that people understand why the faces of these girls are posted.
We also intend on promoting the DEPDC.org (Development and Education Programme for Daughters and Communities). This organization is a preventative organization against the trafficking of women and children into the sex industry or other exploitative child labour situations. Donations may also be made by the public, just go to : http://www.depdc.org/
